In the realm of TV, there are superb series finales which leave you with the
existentialistic question of “what
do I do with my life now?” and then there are the “welp, I guess that’s
over” endings. After seven years, a dynamic first few seasons, and
years’ worth of available literary source
material, True Blood unfortunately falls into the latter
category. I don’t know what I was expecting for final episode 7.10 "Thank you". Many
main characters were already dead, dying, or had hit the road. What I will say is that I thought Sookie's fairy powers, which made a mysterious cameo in the first episode, would ultimately have a greater impact in the show's conclusion.
What Happened:
Bill is rapidly dying from Hep-V and is so ill that he feels warm to the touch and Sookie can hear his thoughts wishing her a life full of love and babies. He alludes to the fact that this journey to death is making him feel human again. He implores Sookie to give him a true death at the hands of her powerful energy orb, the last speck of her fae essence. They eerily walk to the graveyard where Bill has a burial plot. They hug, smooch, and stare at each other, wasting crucial minutes of the finale. As tears stream down her face, Sookie tells Bill that she realizes that she can't lose that fae part of herself and dissolves her energy orb. That's when things get messy. Bill still asks Sookie to kill him (because that kind of guilt won't weigh on her, right?) Sookie breaks a shovel and painstakingly (no pun intended) stabs Bill through the heart giving way to an explosion of yucky guts and innards all over Sookie, who chooses to stay in the grave and weep in the mess.
What Should Have Happened:
Bill is rapidly dying from Hep-V and is so ill that he feels warm to the
touch and Sookie can hear his thoughts wishing her a life full of love
and babies. He alludes to the fact that this journey to death is making
him feel human again. He implores Sookie to give him a true death at the
hands of her powerful energy ball, the last speck of her fae essence.
They eerily walk to the graveyard where Bill has a burial plot. They
hug, smooch, and stare at each other and then Sookie creates her energy orb and holds it between them. Something magical begins to happen and the light continues to grow and engulfs them both.
Bill: "Sookie, what's happening?!"
Sookie: "I don't know! I've never done this before"
An explosion of light and sound fills the screen. After all the fast forward scenes of New Blood we see a pregnant Sookie holding a large barbeque for family and friends as a now human Bill turns around at the head of the table and embraces Sookie. Sookie makes mention of their unborn daughter Claudine kicking inside of her implying that Sookie was able to maintain her fairy essence while also turning Bill human.
In Reality:
However, that was not the conclusion we were left with. While there is a barbecue with family and friends, a pregnant Sookie embraces a seemingly human, black haired man whose face we never get to see. A face which for all intents and purposes should have been Alcide's. Considering he could have given her love, marriage, babies, and not to mention numerous, sexy lap dances, there was no reason for writers to kill him off episodes prior. The season had been a rushed jumble of plots and storylines they tried to hastily tie up, and while the finale slowed things down with only three main plots, it didn't do much in the way of redeeming what had already been lost, creatively.
On a positive note, Bill informed Andy that Compton Manor would be his after Bill's death and asked him to rent it out, for one dollar, to Jessica and Hoyt. Jessica and Hoyt then got married at Compton Manor in a beautiful, quaint ceremony officiated by Andy Bellefleur. If you had been following Jessica's blog and vlog (two of the high points of the True Blood universe) then you'll love the adorable photos she posted of the wedding party. They can be found at: http://www.babyvamp-jessica.com/babyvamp-jessica/2014/8/5/jessica-wedding-draft
All in all, I've been disappointed with the creative direction of True Blood for quite some time now. However, I stuck by because I was four years in and was reading every book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Over time, many characters were losing their depth, but I still had my favorites, like Lafayette, Pam, Jessica and Jason, which made it worthwhile to watch. For that reason, I wouldn't mind spin-offs of a few of those characters, but I think for now we'll just go with, Thank you and farewell, True Blood.
What did you think of the True Blood series finale? What is what you expected? What would you have liked to see happen?

True Blood 7.8 Recap - For Whom the Bell Tolls (Spoilers)
True Blood has fallen so far from its stellar, cohesive first few seasons that I think its ending will come as a refreshing release. Sookie and Bill back together feels forced down viewers' throats for the sheer purpose of closing out the show mirroring how their ill-fated love started in season 1. Even talk of Bill's past betrayal didn't seem to give Sookie any pause. Poor, sexy, shirtless Alcide. He never had a chance. Sookie has become a lackluster heroine for me who has replaced her
former classy repartee with awkwardly timed 'f' bombs. I think I've even got Pam beat on
my number of eye rolls when Sookie's on-screen.
Sarah Newlin gives herself up to Eric and the Yakuza as the cure to vampires suffering from Hep-V. The Yakuza plan is to synthesize her blood, but not to its full capacity. That will keep the money flowing in as the infected continue seeking out the 'New Blood'. A newly healed Eric tracks Sookie down at Bill's just to let her know that he is okay now. I guess he wasn't deterred by Sookie's scantily robed presence at Compton Manor. Although visibly shocked from learning that Bill has Hep-V, Eric chooses not to let Sookie in on the Newlin cure. After an impromptu trip to Fangtasia with some pseudo glamouring by Eric, Sookie tracks down Sarah in the Fangtasia dungeon-basement. "Even as the cure, you're still the f****ng problem." The Newlin's have always excelled at being thorns in sides.
Though she had her moments in the beginning of the season when I appreciated her sass, in the end, Violet was a whack job with a superiority complex and a horribly wicked sense of scorned revenge. However, she was the only legitimate villain of the final season and quickly met her true death at the hands of Hoyt. I suppose that was only fitting considering he unknowingly killed his mother's killer. Speaking of Hoyt, as a fan from the beginning of Hoyt and Jessica's romance, I loved seeing them back together with such instant on-screen chemistry. Apparently, even despite a glamour, Hoyt still loves Jessica deep down. And I'm all smiles! With Jessica and Jason seemingly tying up their complicated, sexual relationship as a "beautiful friendship," there is definitely hope that Hoyt won't go back to Alaska, or Bridget.
It took seven seasons for Tara's backstory to be fully revealed. She was killed in the first episode of season 7 as a main cast member only to be brought back as a recurring vision. Lettie Mae and Tara finally find the closure they need to allow them to both move on, albeit in different ways.
In the end, Bill chooses not to ingest Sarah's blood to save his own life. Season 7 has been the season of emo flashbacks of Bill's former life. Either the virus is affecting his reasoning skills or Bill is electing to succumb to the disease. Either way, I don't have the highest of expectations for these final two episodes. Oh, well - Hoyt and Jessica!!

True Blood Episode 7.5: It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To
This week on True Blood, Sookie finally mourned the loss of Alcide...sort of. It all goes back to the fact that Sookie never loved Alcide as much as he loved her, that it's difficult to empathize with Sookie's stifled emotion.
After sleeping for a day, Sookie wakes up to Jackson Hevereaux at the Stackhouse home helping gather up Alcide's belongings. Lafayette and James are throwing a party to celebrate life and Sookie reluctantly agrees to host. The party basically goes off without a hitch and has high points like Andy and Jessica reconciling, Andy's proposal to Holly, and powerful toasts honoring the memory of Alcide and Tara. However, the party has its share, to be expected, of shenanigans arise. Jessica finds James and LaFayette getting their doggie style on in the car James and Jessica bought together; Jason rescinds James' invitation to the Stackhouse residence. LaFayette lets Jessica know that while the situation is messed up, she needs to love James or let him go so that he can have happiness of his own. In a moment of vulnerability Jessica has sex with Jason. If Violet wasn't crazy before, hearing Jason and Jessica having sex is bound to make her go batsh*t. That scorn looks like it will be making its way to Adilyn, and Jessica and Violet will be going toe to toe.
Lettie Mae stabs Willa in the dining room in a continued effort to contact Tara through the power of vampire blood. (A storyline, might I add, that is quite tiring.) Nicole isn't used to the Bon Temps lifestyle and loses it. Crazy crap has been happening in Bon Temps for years and her mind is blown while everyone else continues partying. I have a feeling the prospect of possibly bringing a were-baby into this world is going to start to weigh on her. Sam better watch out.
On the other side of the border Eric and Pam are on the hunt for Sarah Newlin who is on the hunt for Laura Bush. "I'm not a monster. I'm a Buddhist," Sarah tells her mother at a Republican party. Unfortunately, Sarah is also a target on the Yakuza hitlist. The Yakuza bust in on the party killing all attendees, including Sarah's parents. Eric gets his bloody revenge on the Yakuza assassin who killed one of his many loves and momentarily gets his hands on Sarah.
In a startling turn of events, after numerous flashbacks to Bill's former life with his family, it appears that Bill, too, has Hep-V. I can't help but wonder if the power of fairy blood would help cure vampires of Hep-V. However, that would open up another can of worms as those with fairy blood would become delicious targets of vampires across the nation.
There are only 5 episodes left before True Blood meets its true end. At this rate, I just expect more main character deaths and only a couple happy endings. As for heroine-ish character Sookie, I've got my money on her ending up solo, but content.
What did you think of tonight's episode of True Blood? How do you think these last 5 episodes will play out?

True Blood 7.3 "Fire in the Hole" Vent Post
SPOILERS: If you have not yet seen True Blood episode 7.3, turn away now, but return after watching so we can chat about the details in the comment section below...
There have been a lot of weak storylines in the past three episodes that just feel like fillers, such as the return of Sarah Newlin. At this point in the series finale season, fillers are just unnecessary and are contributing to the rushed feeling of storylines and character development. A sick Eric was once again rude to Pam, while in full out emo mode, and viewers were suddenly supposed to feel some type of emotion over the loss of his past shag buddy, Sylvie. It was really just a way to introduce a new villain-ish entity.
After shooting Jessica in the shoulder during a stand-off in the road, Maxine Fortenberry has her heart ripped out by Violet. All the other filthy humans fled like roaches, but would unfortunately return at the end of the episode for what would send me into table flipping mode.
Apparently True Blood's final season promo "Goodbyes Suck" was actually a foreshadow for the sucky ways in which major characters, we have grown with for years, would meet their final deaths. The season premiere, 7.1, brought the death of Tara, off screen, leaving nothing but a bloody pool of her remains. Those close to her didn't really mourn her true death, and the reason seemed to be because she had already "died" once before.
Tonight saw the death of fan favorite, Alcide, which viewers paying attention could probably see coming from the start of the episode through a series of events that played out like this:
Fellow fans, what was your reaction to the loss of Alcide (Joe Manganiello) on True Blood? What did you think of this episode? How do you think the show will end?

- Sookie leaves Alcide behind at the house without a word of her plan to go with Bill and get taken by Zompires to the other hostages.
- Alcide goes to Compton Manor in search of Sookie and then follows her trail.
- While sitting in the woods as bait, Sookie proceeds to tell her "gal pal" Bill that she does not love Alcide as much as she knows he loves her and she could live with him loving her less. You know, in order to eliminate some of her guilt.
- Alcide and Sam come to both Sookie and Bill's rescue as Alcide ganks a Zompire.
- Alcide immediately shows concern for Sookie's well-being, instructing her not to open her eyes or mouth to Zompire blood without first bathing in the pond.
- While naked in his human form, Alcide is shot in the head and heart by the filthy humans hiding in the bushes.
- Sookie doesn't cry over Alcide's body half as hard as she did when Bill came to her rescue against Rene and got fourth degree vampire sunburn.
- All in all, in an effort to save Sookie from another one of her misguided attempts to "keep anyone else from dying" Alcide pays the price and gets killed.
Fellow fans, what was your reaction to the loss of Alcide (Joe Manganiello) on True Blood? What did you think of this episode? How do you think the show will end?

True Blood 7.1 "Jesus Gonna Be Here" (SPOILERS)
This recap containers *spoilers*. Stop here if you have yet to see True Blood 7.1!
True Blood's final season premiere didn't waste any time picking up right where it left off in the season six finale, with great intensity, and putting the axe to major and minor characters alike. The final minutes of episode 6.10, "Radioactive" fast forwarded the characters and audience six months ahead where Sookie and Alcide are lovers living in Gran's house (something tells me Gran would "tsk" about that), Sam is the new mayor with a pregnant girlfriend, and Hepatitus-V is spreading, turning big bad vamps into zombie-like creatures. On orders of Mayor Sam, every human has a vampire bodyguard. As season seven opens at a vamp-human mixer, Hep-V 'Zompires' attack and kill Tara, deputy Kevin Ellis, and many other Bon Temps citizens. Holly, Arlene, and Sam's pregnant girlfriend Nicole are kidnapped and held under Fangtasia in-line to become 'Zompire' meals. Despite being able to turn into literally any animal (many with heightened sense of smell), Sam decides to turn into his usual Border Collie during Nicole's kidnapping. It took everything inside of me to not flip a table...again.
Let's just take a minute to address Tara's death, shall we? Tara (Rutina Wesley), who has been a shining star on this show (I don't care what anyone else says), was on screen for about two minutes attempting to get her mother to shelter before taking on a jacked up 'Zompire.' The last moments you see of Tara are her stomping a mud-hole in said 'Zompire' with her snazzy kicks. A few minutes later, however, Lettie Mae laments the death of her daughter while sitting in a pool of blood with blood covered clothes.
Everyone in Bon Temps seems to blame Sookie for the 'Zompire' attack. Even during the fallout of the attack, Alcide resents her past choice for loving vampires, as if that love conceived Hepatitus-V. Sookie mopes about a bit, walking home alone in the woods, ignoring Alcide's calls, and I was ready for the next scene.
In another part of the world the radiant Pam plays a game of Russian Roulette with another vampire and boasts about her impending threesome with the devil. That Pam. So colorful. It turns out that Pam is on the hunt for her Maker in South Africa. It should be pointed out that Pam was unable to feel the demise of Tara after having released her to search for Eric. It will be interesting to see how Pam responds to the news; that is to say her storyline even leads her back to Bon Temps.
Speaking of reactions, or lack thereof, to Tara's death, LaFayette reveals to vampire James (formerly played by Luke Grimes) that he feels relief. After having grieved Tara's first death, he now feels nothing. He and James then have a heart to heart about the Vietnam War and the uselessness of personal attachments.
Jason got his sex. A "f*** for f***'s sake".
Chris Bauer's stellar performance stole the show for me tonight. Between his speech on the severity of taking a life, referring to his kidnapped loved one as "my Holly," and letting Bill know that they will never be good, I couldn't take my eyes or ears off of Andy Bellefleur.
Jessica redeemed herself, somewhat, by sticking to her promise to protect the Bellefleur residence from 'Zompires', even in impending sunrise. After being invited in by Adilyn, Jessica resists the urge to eat her.
At the town church service, Lettie Mae rebuffs Sookie's attempt to console her and continues the blame game. Upon her graceful exit, which is marred by the angry, insulting thoughts of citizens, Sookie begs the town to let her help them as I sat and wondered why she didn't point out the hypocrisy of all those people sitting in church thinking horrid thoughts about her. One crisis at a time, I suppose. The season overview of what's to come on True Blood continues the look of intensity and I can only wonder how this show will come to an end.

True Blood 6.10 Season Finale: Sookie, You in Danger Girl (Spoilers)
Whew. True Blood season finale 6.10, "Radioactive" was definitely jam packed.
Sookie and Alcide had a sweet moment after the funeral right before she reunited with Jason, Tara, and Pam, who was surprisingly happy to see Sookie, during the naked vampire lawn party where there was volleyball, sex, jiving, and a mention of Target. Jason's uncomfortably possessive new vampire friend, Violet, greeted Sookie first with the desire for violence, and then some serious tongue action. Warlow finally showed his true Ike Turner side and molly-wopped Sookie, tied her to a tree, choked her a few times, and bit her furiously. I guess I'm the only person who never forgot Warlow killed all of the fairies. I never trusted the rat bastard, and I read plenty of reviews saying he was growing on fans. Never that. Pretty boy Ben was as dark as the figure we kept seeing last season. When he told her that, "The truth is I really do just want to f*** you, and own you, and use you for your blood" I was too ready for someone to decapitate him.
After all the Lillith juice had worn off, Bill returned to feeling like regular, emo Bill and finally regretted sacrificing Sookie and treating her so badly...yet again. Jessica urged him to go save Sookie and not make her promise to maintain his humanity a promise made in vain. Adeline tapped into her fairy light to transport Jason, Bill, Andy, Violet, and herself to rescue Sookie. Unfortunately, Warlow teleported back to the Bon Temps plane and made quick work of the team, once again getting his hands on Sookie.
Holy jeepers, Batman! Is that Niall?! You betcha! Niall made a wonderful, yet brief, return through the portal in Sookie's bathroom and held Warlow as Jason thrust a stake right through his cold, evil heart, leaving him a puddle of glittery blood. Almost immediately all vampire sunscreen wore off.
Let's just take a moment to bask in and scream in horror at Eric's single brief scene in this episode, which I'm sure will leave many fans up in arms, contemplating returning next summer. While tanning completely nude (basking) on top of a snow covered mountain, Eric catches fire and his screams as his flesh was incinerating sent chills up my spine.
Playing out almost like a season premiere or even a series finale, midway through the show viewers are fast forwarded six months from the death of Warlow, and woo-wee things have changed. Vampire Bill was now also Author Bill having written a memoir of his time as Billith. Alcide and Sookie were a couple presumably living together and getting their cute little freak on. The beginning of the episode foreshadowed the possibility of romance blossoming between the two, but to be honest I was just relieved Alcide removed that wig. Jason has been doing some heavy duty "downtown digging" on Violet for 178 nights with no sexual reciprocation, making things incredibly hard for him, literally and figuratively. For some reason I can't help but smell possible, future villain in her. Sam is now mayor and Merlotte's has become Arlene's Bellefleur Bar and Grill. After Bon Temps residents had their blood tested for Hep V, Mayor Sam encouraged all residents to pair up with an uninfected vampire bodyguard in exchange for some of their blood. Lettie Mae and Tara reconciled via Lettie Mae's offer of her blood to nourish Tara in an effort to make up for being a disappointing mother during her childhood. Jessica apologized to Andy and offered her protection in return for nothing. Honestly that was the best scene of the episode for me because you could truly feel all of Andy's pain and rage from the death of his daughters at Jessica's hands as he held his gun at her heart and Jessica was willing to accept whatever fate he deemed appropriate. Andy closing the door and Jessica standing guard definitely tugged on some heartstrings. Bill offered his protection to Sookie as Alcide proceeded to do his growling thing to which Bill responded, "You can growl all you want, bright eyes." And honestly, who hasn't thought that whenever Alcide tries to start a measuring contest? I digress. Hep V infected vamps look a lot like zombies and they roll deep and were headed straight for Sam's Human/Vampire Pairing Party. I'm guessing next season will pick up right where we left off, focusing on the battle of good vamps versus bad vamps as the good vamps try to keep humans safe.
But the real cliffhanger? Did Eric survive!? And how about Pam, for that matter? She took flight in search of Eric but she wasn't expecting to lose her ability to walk in the sun either.
What did you think of the season finale? Will you be tuning into season 7 next summer? What do you think the storyline will be about?

True Blood 6.2: The Sun Review - Fae Light Balls and A Contortionistic Death
Tonight's 6.2 episode of True Blood entitled, "The Sun" had more high points than I was expecting. Warlow made his way through a portal and, I'm not positive, but by the looks of it I'm pretty sure he may be an original member of ZZ Top...
I absolutely adore the Stackhouse family dynamic. Jason and Sookie moments are golden to me. It's refreshing to see Sookie spending less time with magical men who are always taking her for granted, and more time with her big brother who has consistently demonstrated that he will do anything for her. Sookie said it herself, "I shouldn't be taking walks with handsome strangers. It never ends well." The entrance of their fairy grandfather, Niall, was a wonderfully executed transition. And who isn't hoping that Rutger Hauer brings a Blind Fury type butt whoopin' to Warlow? I can say that it's episodes like this that put me into Werepanther withdrawal. In the books, Jason's storyline of being turned into a werepanther gave him a power and defining presence in the supernatural world. It broke my heart tonight to see him watch Sookie and Niall share in their Fae light balls after Niall reprimanded Jason's lack of preparedness for the coming battle, and informed him that he is in fact NOT a fairy prince; however, I feel that Jason is the most genuine of all the characters on the show, so he still shines without a power or ability.
Honestly, what's the need for the werewolves at this point in the show, besides reminding us that Alcide and his pack love nudity, vampire blood, and threesomes? Emma's grandmother proved that she couldn't keep the little girl safe from being kidnapped by vampires, yet Sam blew one up from the inside and previously killed a Maenad. I think it's safe to say he wins the 'Father of the Year Award'. The attack on Sam and Lafayette by Alcide and his bitch (and I mean that literally...ok and figuratively) to forcefully take Emma back put the nail in the coffin for me on the need to wrap up the werewolf storyline. I would be satisfied with just seeing the cutie patootie that is Emma in her pup form every once in a while.
The sexy Alexander Skarsgard got to showcase his acting range in a scene that depicted more than just the hunky, brooding, Viking sheriff and rather a dorky zoologist in glasses and clothes too small for his large and lovely body. (Does anyone else get as turned on as I do when he raises his voice...?) Viewers also get to see that the humans aren't messing around, and have found significant ways to take vampires down, including deflecting glamouring while, in a comedic twist, Nora, Pam, and Tara are forced to share blood out of a milk carton.Sharing is caring.
The most unnerving part of the episode came in the form of Bill's fatal contortionist act on an unsuspecting vampire blood donor as he drained her of all the blood in her body...through her mouth into his. Is it me or does Bill love savagely contorting women? I'm sure you remember when Bill twisted Lorena's head around during one of their sexcapades. Sure you do; if you're anything like me, it stuck with you for days. I, fortunately, had time to avert my eyes this time but, sheesh, this lady never had a chance. Oh yeah, and he's also clairvoyant now, so there's that.

True Blood Season 6 (Update)
Update 6/11: So it appears that Sookie's love interest in season 6 will not be the sexy Quinn, but rather a fairy named Ben Flynn. Perhaps you tried to get witty with the rhyming, True Blood, but not cool. Not cool at all. In the short story "Gift Wrap" in A Touch of Dead Sookie has a Christmas Eve one night stand of passion with a fairy named Preston. Nothing else really came from it. Chronologically, this story takes place after book 8 in the series but hey, what the heck True Blood? Since everything else plot-wise is out of whack let's throw this random Ben Flynn plot in, too. If you keep up with my blog then you know that I’m a huge fan of the Sookie Stackhouse novel series. It’s no surprise then that when the show True Blood started 6 years ago, I was immediately hooked. The series started off keeping close to the plot of its predecessor novels, representing each season, respectively. However, as the seasons have progressed, the show has gone off the tracks and has become a new beast entirely (no pun intended). I understand the need for minor plots, storylines and characters on screen, but too many and it’s overkill. That’s how I feel about True Blood now; somewhere between seasons 4 and 5, for me, the show seems to have lost its raison d’Ăªtre.
Therefore, I may be one of
the only fans of the HBO series who isn’t that excited about this upcoming
season and may not tune in consistently, opting
to check out new summer programing and catching the replays. I wasn’t
too thrilled with season 5 which had a cluster of fairy hybrid babies,
an acrobatic birthing sequence, fire/shadow monsters, multiple
personalities of Lafayette (which is always acted to
perfection, but was all over the place plot wise) and vampires on what
seemed like steroids. Also, if we reference a connection to its
respective novel,
Definitely Dead, there looks to be no Quinn, no Amelia, no Pelt family revenge and kidnapping (which was one of the pinnacle points of
Definitely Dead’s plot), no reason to go to Louisiana, because
Hadley is in fairy land, and the queen is already definitely dead, so no
crazy violent ball brawls. Jason still isn’t a werepanther (a plot line
eliminated which I’m still begrudging), although
he did tap into his inner Van Helsing. There does, however, look to be a
lot of running from uber-vamp-Bill, now imbued with Lillith’s blood,
vampires being hunted by mortals…again, and a whole lot of Alcide
shirtless. We’ll see how the shortened season (12
episodes down to 10) goes. You can be sure I will be blogging some
feedback as the season progresses.
Are you excited about the premiere of True Blood next week? What are you hoping to see or not see?

True Blood: "Use It!"
“USE IT!...USE IT!” This is a line from the lackluster final installment of the
Blade trilogy, Blade: Trinity. (This was also the first
of 3 comic book heroes Ryan Reynolds would play. Sigh.) But I digress. Blade
repeats this to Whistler’s daughter when
she feels hopeless after losing her friends in battle. This is the
line I have been quietly chanting since season 4 as I watch, what I
feel are, discombobulated episodes of
True Blood. Throughout this blog I’m sure you’ve seen my fanatical love for all things
Sookie Stackhouse Novels oriented, including seasons 1-3 of HBO’s hit series based on the novels,
True Blood. As I quietly
chant, “USE IT!” I am sincerely hoping that Alan Ball and friends can
hear my plea for them to stop taking lame creative liberties and use the
core plot of the novels for the respective
seasons. This includes not diverging into a realm of subplots grasping
for life on screen but filled with the stuff of Twinkies, and pushing
characters who snap the audience back into attention and truly shine
(Pam,
Lafayette ) onto the backburner for 15 seconds of screen time. Does
every major and minor character need to have an individual plot? No
thanks. By the end of the episode, which seems to get shorter
and shorter every week, my head is spinning with visions of smokey fire
monsters, leather-clad Bill and Eric bopping along, and just all around
“bad juju” (as Lafayette would say).
Tara
was correct last night when she said that, “the more things change the
more they stay the f*ng same!” Because although
Tara is now a vampire, she is still angry and bitter with the world and
the people in it. Thanks writers. (Insert sarcasm here) Just as I was
beginning to like the new season 4 MMA, kick ass
Tara , she comes full circle to the Tara who was trying to break away
from Bon Temps all along. Plus side? It looks like she can hold her own
against a vampire 2 years older than her. And speaking of things staying
the same,
Jason is still a guilt-ridden sex fiend with a kind heart and good
intentions but who is
not a werepanther. He
spent so much of last season and the beginning of this season chasing
after Jessica like a love-struck puppy that I found myself resenting the
writers for not using his werepanther storyline
from the novel. Honestly at this point in the show, that would probably
just be one more supernatural creature added to a roster that is
currently bubbling over in the show, but has no where to go.
What do you think?

True Blood Season 5
**Possible Spoilers if you haven't yet seen Season 4 of True Blood...
Last year I wrote on the pros and cons of the season 4 premiere of True Blood. While I ended up enjoying the season simply because the amazing acting coupled with magic and the supernatural creates an awesome 50 minutes per week, with the premiere of season 5 tonight (based on Dead As A Doornail), I am both excited and a little wary because of the creative liberties Alan Ball and his team have taken with the show. The Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse Novels, which the series is loosely based on, is a fantastic literary series; each season of the show follows a book in sequence. It's so fantastic, that while I realize a 12 episode season can't contain everything a 300+ page novel can, I have had my share of disappointments of veered plot lines and some missing characters.
For instance, Claudine was drained and killed by an amnesiac Eric in season 4 when she's supposed to be around to protect Sookie for about 5 more books/seasons; Jason never turned into a werepanther; Bill is king and a bit of a d-bag; Russell Edgington is still the big bad. Many of my pros have centered on the additions of some characters who add to the dynamic and some plot twists I didn't see coming. So let's see what this season has in store for us! But I tell you, if Quinn (the sexy, tall, bald, purple-eyed, strong, weretiger who also happens to be my book-boyfriend;) doesn't show up towards the end of this season, I might have to write an angry-toned letter. But also, the dynamic of Quinn also hinges upon who is chosen to play him. I always find it interesting that True Blood is filmed each year and the vampires are supposed to maintain this timeless, un-aging look. If the show follows the 13 novel timeline, 8 years from now, Bill and Eric may be looking a bit rough. Haha.

Sookie Stackhouse Novels
UPDATE 5/20: So I recently finished the latest novel, Deadlocked, in The Southern Vampire Mysteries and it was wonderful! You can read that post here. Below is an updated order of the novels with the addition of Deadlocked. The different short stories of A Touch of Dead fall in between the first few novels, so I placed it after the last novel where a story appears, chronologically. Enjoy!
_____________________________________________________________________

Dead Until Dark (2001); Living Dead in Dallas (2002); Club Dead (2003); Dead to the World (2004); Dead as a Doornail (2005); Definitely Dead (2006); All Together Dead (2007); From Dead to Worse (2008); Dead and Gone (2009); [A Touch of Dead (2009)]; Dead in the Family (2010); Dead Reckoning (2011); Deadlocked (2012); Dead Ever After (2013); After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse Coda (2013)

If you know me, or read this blog then you'll know that I love to read and write. One of my favorite authors is Charlaine Harris. You may know her as the best selling author of The Southern Vampire Mysteries (also known as The Sookie Stackhouse Novels). The novels have gone on to be chronologically adapted into the award winning HBO series True Blood. Each season of the show is based on a book and the show will be returning this year on season five based on Dead as a Doornail.
After the first season of the show my parents got me the first book in the series, Dead Until Dark, for Christmas and that quickly spawned the addiction which has now taken me through all eleven books in the series. The twelfth book, Deadlocked, comes out May of this year and the only thing keeping me hinged on sanity and not losing my marbles in anticipation is re-reading the series. Harris' other books outside of The Southern Vampire Mysteries are
also wonderful, but I've grown attached to heroine, Sookie Stackhouse,
her adventures, and the unique cast of characters that have graced the
pages. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do when the thirteenth and final book comes out in 2013. I think I may go crazy hanging on the ellipsis of, "...Sooo, what do I do now?" I hope Ms. Harris understands my fear and likely potential of going into a catatonic state when this series ends.
UPDATE!! Sooo, I'm almost ashamed to admit that it took me this long to get The Sookie Stackhouse Companion but I just bought it today and am psyched to read it! Especially, "Small-Town Wedding" which has a surprise cameo by my favorite SVM character, Quinn!! More on him to come in a later post. ;)

Showdown: Jeffrey Dean Morgan vs. Kevin Alejandro
If you like sexy men, great actors and awesome TV shows then you're really going to love this showdown between Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kevin Alejandro. These two leading men can't seem to make it through a series before getting the axe. But nevertheless, they are always dreamy.
J.D.M.
J.D.M. was in two DC Comic book movies, Jonah Hex (2010) and Watchmen (2009). In Watchmen he gets kicked out of a window and in Jonah Hex he's already a corpse brought back to life for about 4 minutes.

Showdown: Bill vs. Eric (True Blood)
On the hit HBO series, True Blood the main undead men vying for the affections of sassy, telepathic waitress Sookie are Bill and Eric. Now if you're like me and have read the novel series by Charlaine Harris, then you know how the love triangle is playing out. The series, with creative changes on the part of Alan Ball, takes a different route with the season 4 finale leaving viewers all wondering, "who will win her heart?" I thought we should take a look at what each vampire, according to the television series, is bringing to the table:
- Gave Sookie his blood to save her life from an intense beating
- Unfortunately he also glamored her assailants under the queen's orders
- Courted Sookie
- Pronounces it "Soo-keh"
- Killed the queen to protect Sookie
- Kept watch over Sookie when a serial killer was stalking her
- Walked into the sun to save Sookie from serial killer, René
- Almost ate Sookie in a fit of starvation
- Killed another vampire to protect Sookie; a serious crime in vampire law
- Old-fashioned
- Gave Sookie his blood to save her from a gunshot wound
- Killed the uncle who molested her when she was a child
Eric:
- Tricked Sookie into drinking his blood to "save his life"
- Lusted after Sookie
- Pronounces it "Sooookie"
- Buried killer vampire Russell Edgington under concrete
- Shielded Sookie's body from a bomb
- Ate her fairy god-mother
- Fought a werewolf for her
- Disowned his progeny, Pam for almost killing Sookie
- Rescued Sookie from the Fellowship of the Sun
Sheesh. Is it just me or does it seem like Sookie always in some type of danger? I don't know about you, but I'm feeling like Bill is leading the race in the suitor who will win the heart of Sookie...

True Blood: Season 4 Premiere
SPOILER ALERT!!
If you have not yet watched the season 4 premiere of True Blood which aired last Sunday, make sure you do...soon! But also make sure to come back and read this post and leave your thoughts and opinions on the episode.
If you know me then you know that I am a HUGE...huge True Blood fan, be it books, graphic novels, or the TV series. I've read all of the books in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries Series including her latest, Dead Reckoning. I finished that awesome book in about T-minus 8 seconds and now I'm having so much withdrawal that I might just re-read the entire series to compensate before the next novel in 2012. True Blood is based on Harris' novels, each season based on a respective novel, but director Alan Ball also takes some creative liberties when it comes to plot and characters. Because I love the novels so much, I would love every aspect to be recreated onscreen. Unfortunately, the season 4 premiere left a bit to be desired for me. However, this post is in no way saying that I will not be giving the rest of the season a chance and an adhesive-like propinquity to the television Sunday evenings. Are you ready for some pros and cons?!
Did that feel like football to you guys?! No? Okay, let's move on...
Cons:
- Bill currently has way too much power in both human and vampire politics.
- Eric now owns Sookie's house and apparently...Sookie. What?
- Sam and his brother's storyline of dysfunction is just lasting way too long.
- Sheriff Andy Bellefleur is hooked on V and is off the wall. For a season or two there I had actually started liking him.
- Tara now appears to be living a double life as Kimbo Slice.
Pros:
- The year time jump in the show allowed for the characters to mature and for the storylines to not feel so clustered.
- Nelsan Ellis is a brilliant actor who makes the character Lafayette come to life on screen. His character is taking a big shift from the novels, but in a great way!
- Jason has definitely matured and the werepanther storyline appears to be moving along nicely.
- Arlene and René's baby is a great plot twist. It will be very interesting to see where that story goes.

Gambit
Since I was just a young one, I have had an incredible fascination with X-Men. I grew up reading the comic books. From Giant-Size X-Men, to The New Mutants, to the solo Wolverine series. There are few people I know who are not aware, or fans of the Uncanny X-Men. If not, I have absolutely no qualms with giving them a crash course.
As for the cartoon, I was there every Saturday morning for its 1992-1997 run, and every subsequent morning when it went into syndication. I also have the signature theme song on my Mp3 player. It hypes me up no matter what. (Yes, it is that serious :) I think you're getting the picture.
One of my favorite characters has always been the kinetic, card-throwing Gambit (Remy LeBeau). That Cajun superhero always has me glued to the screen or page. You can imagine my utter excitement at the news that Gambit was going to be a main character in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". Boy was I disappointed. Not only was the actor portraying Gambit some pretty boy cover model, juxtapose to Gambit's rugged, bad-boy charisma, but he possessed as much of a Cajun accent as I do Scottish. My biggest gripe with the accent comes with knowing that many dedicated actors will do whatever to bring life to a well-known character on the screen. Case in point: On the hit HBO show, "True Blood" the character Rene Lenier, played by Michael Raymond-James, takes on a Cajun persona. Though the character was only written to play on one season, Raymond-James hired his own dialect coach for the role. Now that's dedication. I was both hoping and expecting more for Gambit's first big screen appearance. I guess I can only be somewhat surprised. The previous X-Men movies could have also been better, storyline wise.
